A Fry Cook on Venus

Published by emilylynn at 2:23 am under Hollywood Lurve Edit This

I was all set to rant against the Octomom’s new reality television show (more on that later) when my fiance alerted me to the news that writer and director John Hughes died today from a heart attack at the age of fifty-nine. As a lover of his films, I am very saddened by this news. He was responsible for many hours that I spent in front of the television as a kid when I should’ve been out doing something productive or active. His resume is impressive and contains more than just the Brat Pack movies with which he is most often associated such as Pretty in Pink, The Breakfast Club, and Sixteen Candles.

Mr. Hughes, thank you for Jake Ryan.

Without John Hughes,  the masses would have never been exposed to Ferris Bueller’s impromptu holiday, the insufferable yet lovable Uncle Buck, a giant dog named Beethoven, and the Griswolds would have never gone on vacation.

Life would be incomplete.

There is so much I could say about John Hughes but I find myself at a loss for words. At age fifty-nine, I feel as though he has left the party early. However,  he has left behind a legacy of films that, despite cheesiness, are identifiable to many who feel as if they have been pigeonholed into a stereotype or just want to live vicariously through Ferris Bueller in a Ferrari.

As Ferris said, ” Life moves pretty fast. You don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” Thank you, John Hughes, for providing us with wonderful entertainment that allowed us to slow down once in a while. Your humor and wit are a great loss for entertainment and you will be missed.
